Jonathan

After forty-five minutes, the helicopter landed above the factory, and a medical team ran over to take them in. “She’s losing consciousness, her heartbeat’s weakening!” Jonathan called out. “Get her to the infirmary, quick!”

“You guys stay out here,” the nurse ordered Jonathan and the rest of the team as they wheeled her into a room. “It’s in our hands now.”

They transferred her to a hospital bed in the room as the doctor ran in with a syringe containing the antibody shot. She swabbed Revital’s neck and injected it directly into her major artery. “Her vitals aren’t good,” the nurse stated, “And her heart rate is dropping.”

“Turn on the defibrillator,” the doctor commanded. She grabbed the electrical paddles and rubbed them together. The moment that the heart rate ceased and Revital began flatlining, the doctor called out, “Clear!” But it didn’t work.

“Again,” she continued, “Turn it up to 300. Clear!”

“We’re getting a pulse again, Doctor,” the nurse finally called out, “You did it.”

“Nurse, get a blood sample, I want to see her toxicology and her reaction to the antibody,” the doctor said.

“Right away, Doctor,” the nurse said.

“Revital, can you hear me?” the doctor spoke to her. “Revital, open your eyes.” She then pulled out a small flashlight from her coat pocket and forced Revital’s eye open. She saw that her sight was unfocused. “I’m afraid her body might have gone into shock. Let’s wait for the blood-test results. Right now we’ve managed to stabilize her. I’m going out to get Jonathan up to speed. Keep an eye on her.”

Jonathan was sitting outside the room, holding his head in his hands. The doctor came out and sat beside him. He didn’t dare look at her – he’d already endured an unbelievable amount of bad news that day. He felt utterly crushed.

“We’ve managed to stabilize her,” the doctor said.

Jonathan let out a sigh of relief and lifted his head.

“We’re checking her blood. We’ll know how she’s reacting to the antibody within the hour. Right now there’s not much else to do but provide her with plenty of fluids and close observation, and that’s precisely what we’re doing.”

“I can’t lose her,” Jonathan said, sitting stooped in the chair.

“You can go in and see her,” the doctor said as he looked at her again. “You look pretty exhausted yourself,” she added.

“I know,” he said, “And I have to keep going, we all do. We don’t have time to rest.”

“I have something to help get you back on your feet, wait right here,” she said and went into the room, coming back out with a few uppers. “Take one, and give some to your team too,” she said and winked at him.

“Oh, thanks, but that won’t be necessary,” Jonathan said, sounding utterly exhausted.

“I insist,” the doctor said, “Take one and go get them. There’s no rest for the wicked.”

“Thank you, Doctor,” Jonathan said as he took a pill and swallowed it. He then went into the room. He saw Revital lying on the bed, her eyes shut.
